World Photography Organisation announced the winners of Sony World Photography Awards for 2024 today. The French photographer Juliette Pavy won the Photographer of the year title for her powerful series Spiralkampagnen : Forced contraception and unintended sterilisation of Greenlandic women.

The Awards, now in its 17th anniversary, celebrates the best photography of the past year. The Sony World Photography Awards exhibition in Somerset House, London, is currently displaying the winning, shortlisted and finalist photographs.

The overall winner

Juliette’s series addressing a crucial social issue earned her not only the title of Photographer of the year, but also $25,000 in cash, Sony equipment, and the opportunity to show a new collection of work next. Her project won first prize in the Professional Competition’s Documentary Category.

Pavy’s victory exemplifies Awards’ commitment in recognizing diverse photography practices. The Professional category winners of this year cover a variety of topics, from climate change and the urgent need to act on it to intimate portraits.

Monica Allende, the Chair of 2024 Professional Competition’s Jury, commented on Juliette’s winning project:
