While taking pictures, a Chinese tourist fell into an Indonesian volcano. According to reports, the woman tripped over her clothes near the edge of Ijen’s volcano. She fell into the boiling, crater-like crater. Unfortunately, she did not survive.
Huang Lihong, 31, was on a guided tour with her husband of the crater when she visited the volcano. When gases ignite, the volcano produces a blue fire. The couple was waiting for sunrise to take pictures of the blue flames and had climbed the volcano to try to do so.
The guide instructed Ms Lihong not to pose near the edge when taking photos. He reported to the authorities that Ms Lihong had backed up towards the edge. Lihong, unfortunately, tripped over her long clothes, fell, and ended up in the crater.
Rescuers had to work for two hours just to recover the body. The incident was ruled as an accident.
Lihong’s death was just another selfie-related or photo-related death. Selfies are now considered a health risk, after so many people died from taking selfies. This is because the victims are often distracted and unaware by their surroundings when they take photos.
An Italian tourist fell into Mount Vesuvius while taking a picture. He was rescued after surviving the fall. Mount Vesuvius, unlike the Ijen Volcano in Java is dormant.
Enjoy these incredible locations but avoid becoming a victim of the selfie culture.
